Thornwood, New York – Betsy Groat, a beloved physical education teacher and coach for 38 years at The Mount Pleasant School District, tragically passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of positive influence on countless students and athletes.
Groat, who was known for her infectious energy and dedication to her students, had an immense impact on the lives of those she taught and coached throughout her long career. Her commitment to developing student-athletes at Westlake High School is particularly remembered by those who had the privilege of learning from her.
In an effort to honor her memory, a fundraising campaign has been set up to establish a scholarship in her name, which will benefit a student-athlete at Westlake High School.
Tina Marie Nicodemo, the organizer of the fundraiser, shared, “Betsy was a beautiful soul, full of life and positivity, and we want to keep her memory alive through this scholarship.”
Social media tributes from friends and former colleagues poured in, with many expressing their deep sorrow at the loss of such an influential figure.
"Betsy was one of the most dedicated and inspiring teachers I’ve ever met. Her impact will never be forgotten," wrote one former student.
