Glasgow, Scotland – Laura Samuel, the esteemed leader of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, tragically passed away on November 20, 2024, at the age of 44.
Her untimely death has left the classical music world mourning the loss of an extraordinary talent.
Samuel, known for her virtuosity as a violinist, was an integral member of the orchestra for over a decade, inspiring audiences and colleagues alike with her technical brilliance and emotional depth.
Born in London on April 3, 1980, Samuel began playing the violin at five years old, showcasing prodigious talent from an early age.
She studied at the Royal Academy of Music and later the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, setting the stage for a remarkable career in classical music.
As a performer, teacher, and advocate for the arts, Laura’s contributions transcended the stage, especially in outreach programs designed to make music accessible to all.
Her legacy will live on through the Laura Samuel Music Fellowship, established in her honor to support young musicians.
A memorial concert is planned to celebrate her life and musical contributions at Glasgow’s City Halls, with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra performing some of her favorite works.
Laura’s family, including her husband Peter and two children, were at the heart of her world.
“Her passion for music and life was infectious,” one colleague said. “Her legacy will continue through the countless lives she touched.”
