Raleigh, North Carolina – Marshall Brain, the distinguished professor and founder of the educational platform HowStuffWorks, passed away on November 21, 2024.

Brain, who was 63 years old, tragically took his own life, leaving a deep void in the world of technology education.

His work at HowStuffWorks made him a household name, as the website became a global leader in explaining complex systems and technology in an accessible and engaging way. Brain’s passion for education and technology also led to a successful television career, where he hosted Factory Floor with Marshall Brain on the National Geographic Channel, a show that explored the inner workings of factories around the world.

His passing was confirmed through a heartfelt social media post by a close friend, which read, “A friends’ celebration of life yesterday, reading a eulogy for another dear friend this Saturday, and now I hear long time friend and show regular Marshall Brain passed away this morning.”

Tributes poured in following the news of his death. Scott Santens, a fellow advocate for Universal Basic Income, shared his condolences, saying, “Marshall Brain has died. His book Manna was the catalyst for beginning my UBI advocacy back in 2013. My gratitude for what he added to humanity.”

Brain, who taught at North Carolina State University (NCSU), is remembered not only for his groundbreaking work in technology but also for his contributions to education. His passing marks the end of an era for the HowStuffWorks community, which continues to thrive in new media formats, including podcasts and videos.
